The Six Laws of Mayan Medicine
We have to ask, did the Mayans have essential oils? It is doubtful, as no distilleries have been discovered. But I believe the Mayans were too savvy not to have figured out enfleurage: how to lock the aromatic power of plants into animal fat or vegetable oils.
They certainly had the use of many trees, herbs, and plants that we know today. The Mayans knew and understood uses for basil, chamomile, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and rue.
Mayans perceived health as “balance,” whereas illness and disease were “imbalance.”
Mayan medicine contained six basic laws or principles:
- First Principle: Mayans believed in the concept of “life force” or ch’ulel. The main goal of the Mayan healer was to balance the flow of life force in the body.
- Second Principle: There is no separation between the body and the soul. The spiritual and physical realms are as one.
