It All Starts with the Right Seeds
Step No. 2: Proper seed species. This is another area where we can have a genetic change. How do you know you have the proper plant species unless you’re growing or working with the grower? And if you don’t understand plants, how are you going to understand the seed? How are you going to understand and know what to look for in the genetics or the species of the seed that you’re choosing if you’re not a farmer?
What is the origin of your seed? How do you know that the seed is not GMO?
I look back over my life, and I think God had something to do with where I am because one thing that I can tell you is that I didn’t consciously choose this path. What I was doing before my accident in 1973 is what I consciously chose to do because I grew up on a ranch. I grew up ranching and farming with my father. I went to Canada and homesteaded in 1967 and developed a ranch there, running cattle and horses and logging in the wintertime. That was because it’s what I knew and what I loved, and that’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life. However, somebody else had a different opinion, and because I wouldn’t listen, He had to get my attention with a tree.
Most seeds are commercially grown in a nursery. If you go to these big seed companies, they’ve got huge greenhouses where they grow the plants to cultivate and gather the seeds so that they can sell them commercially.
Can you imagine what it would cost to go out and wildcraft in the United States and to try to gather seed from yarrow plants in the United States? Or fleabane in Utah? Yeah, it’s cost-prohibitive and that’s why there are commercial companies that grow it. Plants need the natural harshness of the environment to produce good seeds, which in turn produce good molecules of oil.
